Leeds Sports Awards Gordon Benson Honoured

Monday 14th February saw the prestigious Leeds Sports Awards. With 200 guests in attendance, including Leeds United Manager Simon Grayson, international rugby star Jason Robinson and professional tri-athlete, Jonathan Brownlee, the evening celebrated sporting achievements from 2010. Jason Robinson also collected a lifetime achievement award for his dedication to Rugby.

Following an official welcome by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr James McKenna, guests enjoyed dinner at the Headingley venue followed by the presentation of awards. The awards, which included Player of the Year, Young Sportsperson of the Year and Disability Performer of the Year to Coach of the Year and Club of the Year, were presented by a range of significant figures including the Lady Mayoress, David Heddon – Chair of Sport Leeds, Liz Wilson – Chairman of Leeds Sports Federation and Peter Smith – Project Manager of Leeds Gold.

Triathlon did particularly well with Jonathan Brownlee winning Sportsman of the Year – Gordon Benson winning Junior Sportsman of the Year and Lois Rossindale highly commended in the Sportswoman of the Year. Carnegie Director of Triathlon, Jack Maitland, who was shortlisted as Coach of the Year, was also present at the awards ceremony to watch his student, triathlete Jonathan Brownlee pick up his award.

The Leeds Sports Awards are for sports professionals who live within the Leeds area, represent a club which is based within the city council area or, for athletes who attend a University, College or School in the Leeds region.
