British Triathlon 2011 Inter Regional Championships Announced

Hetton Lyons Country Park in Tyne and Wear will play host to the 2011 British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships (IRC’s) taking place on the 4 September 2011. The event will see young triathletes from all three Home Nations and all English regions compete not only for individual honours but also for the coveted team title as well.

The event will be hosted jointly by the North East and Yorkshire and Humberside regions of Triathlon England in conjunction with British Triathlon on a challenging course near Sunderland. All races will be open water swims and on a draft legal bike stage, providing a great racing experience for potential Olympians of the future.

The Youth and open Junior races will also count as the final races in the 2011 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series. Competitors will have the chance to familiarise themselves with the course on Saturday 3 September, before racing gets under way on the morning of 4 September.

Steve Robertson, Chair of the North East Regional Committee, said: “It’s a real honour to be able to invite the best young triathletes in the country to a race in the North East. We’re delighted to be working with Yorkshire and Humberside to make sure the athletes and their supporters will have a great experience at what I know is a great venue.”

Francis Riley, Chair of Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Committee added: “We are very pleased to be involved in jointly organising the IRC’s alongside the North East region. I am confident that the people involved have the right blend of experience, enthusiasm and organisational ability to make this an event the competitors will enjoy immensely and organisers can be proud of – roll on summer.”

Ian Braid Events Director, British Triathlon said “As the National Governing Body we are very keen to stage our major events across the whole of Britain. So I am delighted that we can take the IRCs to the North East for the first time and showcase our up and coming athletes on the performance pathway.”

Triathletes will compete throughout the year to qualify for the honour of representing their region at the IRC’s, with 160 young triathletes making the journey to Sunderland.. There will be three categories to race in including:

Tri Star 2 for 11 to 12 year olds;

Tri Star 3 for 13 to 14 year olds; and

Youth for 15 to 16 year olds.
